New Study

(Pictured: One of my brothers, his son, my son, and me)

Ok, my son's in the bathtub, so this is going to be quick:

I was just perusing my email inbox and found this article on a study in Adoptive Families Magazine. It's about how adoptees fare psychologically when compared to their non-adopted siblings.

Often, I find the articles in Adoptive Families frustrating, as they tend to wax Pollyanna about all things adoption. However, this study seems to have some solid research behind it, and frankly, it's a breath of fresh air after reading all those studies about how screwed up adoptees are. I'm tired of feeling screwed up.

What do you think about this study? How does it compare with your experience in the adoption constellation?

My experience of the adoptive constellation is friends I grew up with and met who all have their problems, but none of them compared worse to the problems of people I met who weren't adopted. They had different problems or their issues to resolve were more lopsided on one or two things. Currently I have a friend who has three adopted sons of different races and he and his wife are divorcing. It is a brutal divorce of dysfunction that is a terrible addition to all that the kids already experienced in their 8 years in foster care. With divorce statistics so high, I can't believe why I hadn't considered the double complicating issues presented by the combination of adoption and divorce, which the article doesn't seem to address.

Today, I heard this interview with Joan Ryan about her book "the Water Giver" and thought you would find it relevant to your ruminations: http://www.kqed.org/epArchive/R910261000
Let me know what you think of the book or the interview.
