Ok, so it seems like the notion of broken links and whole links and restored links is something that many people, not just those touched by adoption, identify with in profound ways. In her comment, Lori B. says, "..the idea that mother and child are both link and broken link I share with you." And as I noted before, Maria wrote that she feels we are all broken links struggling to find wholeness.
What do you think?

My partner and I are preparing to adopt and she was adopted, albeit by her grandparents so that she's not missing the same kind of information closed adoptees are. For her, the choice is definitely about having the same KIND of link as her child even though they won't be biologically connected.
I do think ideas of links and connections are common metaphors people use to structure their thinking. I really liked a post I read this morning where Cynthia talks about how her (adopted) son dances like she did as a child and now she gets to take on what was then her father's role. There are many kinds of links in human chains.
